BMW Z8 E52 buying guide
The aluminium-bodied roadster inspired by the 507, built from 2000 to 2003 with the E39 M5's 4.9 V8 and a six-speed manual. Just 5,703 were made, and most parts are still available.
The versions
- 4.9 V8 (S62), 400PS, shared with the E39 M5
- Six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive
- Aluminium space frame and body; roadster with a hardtop supplied as standard
- Alpina Roadster V8 (2003): 4.8 V8 and a five-speed automatic, softer suspension and 20-inch wheels with conventional tyres
- Left-hand drive only; BMW never built a right-hand-drive Z8
What to check on a Z8
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
The front strut towers
What to look for: Open the bonnet and look at the tops of the front suspension towers on each side, where the suspension bolts to the body. Compare left and right for any distortion or bending.
Why it matters: Distorted or bent front strut towers are one of the known Z8 checks. On an aluminium structure, any damage here needs a specialist's assessment before you buy.
VANOS and cam sensors
What to look for: From cold and on the drive, the engine should idle evenly and pull cleanly through the rev range with no engine warning light. A diagnostic read shows any stored faults.
Why it matters: The S62's VANOS variable valve timing solenoids and camshaft sensors are among its known faults. A diagnostic read before you buy shows whether either is playing up.
Timing chain guides
What to look for: Ask whether the timing chain guides have been inspected or replaced, and look for the invoice. It matters most on higher-mileage cars.
Why it matters: Worn timing chain guides are a known S62 item, especially as mileage rises. Paperwork showing they've been checked or done is a sign of a car that's been looked after.
