What to check on a F85 X5 M or F86 X6 M
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
The auxiliary coolant pump after switch-off
What to look for: After the drive, switch off and open the bonnet. Remove the small plastic inspection plate at the front of the engine cover and feel the left-hand hose: it should be vibrating as the pump keeps running.
Why it matters: This electric pump keeps coolant moving through the turbos for at least 20 minutes after the engine stops. If it fails, the turbos' oil can cook, which shortens their life. A working pump is an easy reassurance to get at the viewing.
Oil level and oil use
What to look for: Check the oil level on the iDrive screen, and ask the seller how often it needs topping up and how they know. Look for frequent oil changes in the history.
Why it matters: This V8 family can use oil, from worn valve stem seals, wear in the cylinder bores, or leaks from the sump and valve covers. Owners who keep a close eye on the level, with oil changed at least at the 10,000 mile or yearly interval, are a sign of a car that's been looked after.
Oil leaks from the sump
What to look for: From underneath, with a torch, look at the bottom of the engine for fresh wet oil or heavy staining on the sump and the underbody shields. While you're there, check the shields' screws are all present and tight.
Why it matters: The sump comes in two parts and can leak at the joint. Fixing it means removing a lot of the drivetrain first, so it's a big job and worth knowing about. The underbody shield screws are known to work loose.
