  • The X4 M is a separate model with its own checks

What to check on a G02 X4

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. The EGR valve fire recalls

What to look for: On a diesel, ask a BMW dealer to confirm by VIN that the exhaust gas recirculation recalls have been done, and check the coolant level with the engine cold.

Why it matters: Between February 2021 and August 2022 the X4 had three recalls for an engine fire risk linked to the exhaust gas recirculation system. Most cars have been done by now, and a dealer can confirm it quickly.

  2. Rear brake calipers on early cars

What to look for: On a car built in spring 2018, press the brake pedal firmly with the engine running and on the drive. It should feel firm, not soft or spongy. Ask the dealer whether the rear caliper recall applies.

Why it matters: Cars built from 16 April to 8 June 2018 were recalled because the rear brake calipers might not have been made to the right specification, which could reduce braking performance and give a soft pedal. It's a dealer fix.

  3. Front wheel bearings and steering

What to look for: On the drive, listen for a hum or rumble from the front that rises with speed and changes as you steer gently left and right. Note any knock through the steering.

Why it matters: Recalls on this generation have covered premature front wheel bearing failure and damaged steering links. A quiet, precise front end is what you want, and a dealer can confirm whether the work applies to the car.
