  • Petrol: 20i and 28i 2.0 turbo four-cylinder, and the M40i 3.0 turbo straight six (N55, 360PS) from 2015
  • xDrive four-wheel drive on all cars
  • 8-speed automatic, with a 6-speed manual on some 20d cars; six-cylinder cars are automatic only

What to check on a F26 X4

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. The diesel EGR cooler recall

What to look for: On a diesel, ask whether the EGR cooler recall has been done, or check with a BMW dealer using the VIN.

Why it matters: BMW recalled X4 20d, 30d and 35d models built from December 2013 to June 2017 because the EGR cooler could leak coolant, which with the heat of the system could cause a fire risk. The recall was later extended. Most cars have been done, but it's quick to confirm.

  2. Other recall work

What to look for: Ask whether all recall work has been done, and have a BMW dealer check from the VIN.

Why it matters: Besides the EGR cooler, the first X4 was recalled for Isofix mountings that could work loose, a fault in the fuel delivery system and faulty pistons in the rear brake calipers. They're free fixes and most have been done.

  3. A knock from the steering

What to look for: On the drive, go slowly over speed bumps and broken surfaces and listen for a knock from the front, particularly the right-hand side, through the steering.

Why it matters: A knocking noise from the front has been traced to a faulty steering rack on some cars, and replacement racks cure it. Ask whether it has been looked at.
