BMW M4 G82/G83 buying guide

The second-generation M4 arrived in 2021 as the G82 coupé and G83 convertible, with the S58 3.0 twin-turbo straight six. UK cars are Competition models with an automatic gearbox, and a 2024 update raised power and made xDrive standard.

The versions

  • M4 Competition: 3.0 twin-turbo straight six (S58), 510PS, rear-wheel drive or M xDrive
  • From the 2024 update: 530PS, M xDrive only in the UK
  • M4 CSL (2022): 550PS, rear-wheel drive, limited to 1,000 cars worldwide
  • Coupé (G82), or convertible (G83) with a fabric roof and M xDrive
  • 8-speed M Steptronic torque converter automatic; the manual wasn't offered in the UK

What to check on a G82 M4

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. The 2021 engine bearing campaign

What to look for: Check the build date, and ask a BMW dealer to confirm by VIN that all technical campaigns are complete, especially on a car built in summer 2021.

Why it matters: BMW halted delivery of some S58 engines built between mid-July and early September 2021 while the main bearing shells were checked, after a coating defect. Affected cars were handled by BMW, so this is a paperwork check.

  2. Brake recall on 2021 cars

What to look for: Ask for confirmation by VIN that the brake recall has been carried out on a 2021 car.

Why it matters: Some early cars were recalled because a weld inside the integrated brake unit might not have been made properly, which could affect braking assistance and the anti-lock function. It's a dealer fix, and most will have been done.

  3. Rattles from the dash and the rear

What to look for: On the test drive, listen over rough roads for a buzz from the centre of the dashboard and rattles from behind the seats.

Why it matters: A loose Harman Kardon centre speaker is a known cause of dash rattles on the G8x M cars, and boot or rear seal problems have caused rattles at the back. Both are minor fixes.
