BMW M2 G87 buying guide

The second-generation M2, built from April 2023 as a rear-wheel-drive coupé with the S58 twin-turbo straight six from the M3 and M4. Power rose with the 2025 model year update, and the M2 CS followed in 2025. It's still offered with a manual.

The versions

  • 3.0 twin-turbo straight six (S58): 460PS from launch, 480PS from the 2025 model year update (UK sales from 2024)
  • M2 CS (from 2025): 530PS, automatic only
  • 6-speed manual or 8-speed ZF M Steptronic automatic (a torque converter, not a dual-clutch)
  • Coupé only, rear-wheel drive

What to check on a G87 M2

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Recall work

What to look for: Before you travel, give the VIN to a BMW dealer and ask whether any recall work is outstanding.

Why it matters: The G87 was included in BMW's wide recall over a starter motor fire risk, and selected cars built from November 2024 to February 2025 were recalled for the brake fluid expansion tank. No M2-specific drivetrain recalls were reported.

  2. Automatic: shifts cold and warm

What to look for: On an automatic, drive from cold and again once fully warm. Check it changes up through every gear to eighth on a steady road, and doesn't hang on to lower gears.

Why it matters: Some owners report the automatic refusing eighth gear or sticking in lower gears, mostly before it's fully warm. A dealer software update or investigation usually follows, so ask about any warranty work.

  3. Manual: first gear and warning messages

What to look for: On a manual, select first from neutral several times with the car stationary, and watch the dashboard for a missing gear number or a gear position message. A diagnostic read shows any stored gear position faults.

Why it matters: Occasional baulking into first is reported on manual cars, and some have shown engine lights and gear position warnings that led to further investigation. Most cars are fine; it's quick to check.
