The third-generation 6 Series was built from 2011 to 2018 as a convertible (F12), coupé (F13) and four-door Gran Coupé (F06). It's mechanically well regarded, and the checks focus on engine-specific items and recalls. The M6 is covered separately.
The versions
- 640d: N57 3.0 straight-six diesel, 313PS
- 640i: N55 3.0 straight-six petrol, 320PS
- 650i: N63 4.4 twin-turbo V8, 407PS, then 450PS on later cars
- Convertible (F12), coupé (F13) and Gran Coupé (F06); xDrive optional
- 8-speed ZF automatic only
What to check on a F12 6 Series
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
EGR cooler recall on the 640d
What to look for: Ask a BMW dealer to confirm by VIN that the EGR cooler recall has been done.
Why it matters: The EGR cooler on the N57 diesel could leak coolant internally, which in rare cases created a fire risk. BMW expanded the recall several times, so checking by VIN is the only reliable way.
Oil use on the 650i
What to look for: Ask how much oil the car uses, and look in the history for BMW's N63 Customer Care Package work. Watch the exhaust for smoke on start-up.
Why it matters: The N63 V8 is known for higher oil consumption, and BMW ran a care package covering the timing chain, injectors and other items. Records of that work are a sign the car has been looked after.
Chain noise at higher mileage
What to look for: Start from cold and listen for a rattle from the engine that doesn't settle within a few seconds.
Why it matters: Timing chain stretch is reported on higher-mileage N57 diesels. An invoice for chain work is valuable.
