BMW 4 Series G22/G23/G26 buying guide
The second-generation 4 Series, from 2020, sold as a coupé (G22), convertible (G23) and Gran Coupé (G26). It's a well-rated car, and most of the checks are about confirming recall work and how a diesel has been used.
The versions
- Petrol: 420i (B48 2.0 turbo, 184PS), M440i xDrive (B58 3.0 straight six, 374PS, with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance)
- Diesel: 420d (B47 2.0, 190PS), M440d xDrive (B57 3.0, 340PS, mild hybrid)
- Coupé, convertible with a fabric roof, and five-door Gran Coupé; the electric i4 is a separate model and isn't covered here
- 8-speed automatic only
What to check on a G22 4 Series

Starter motor recall
What to look for: Check the build date. On cars built between July 2020 and July 2022, ask the seller or a BMW dealer to confirm by VIN that the starter recall has been done. Note any smell of smoke after the drive.
Why it matters: BMW recalled cars across several ranges, including the 4 Series, built between July 2020 and July 2022, because debris could build up in the starter's relay and cause it to overheat. It's a dealer job and quick to confirm.
Gearbox campaign on 2023 cars
What to look for: On a car built in the first half of 2023, ask a dealer to confirm by VIN that any gearbox campaign is complete.
Why it matters: An EU safety campaign covered cars built between 19 January and 15 June 2023, where oil could contaminate the gearbox control unit. Confirming it is done is all that's needed.
Brake disc recall
What to look for: Ask a BMW dealer to confirm by VIN whether the brake disc recall applies to the car and has been done.
Why it matters: The 4 Series has a recall listed against its brake discs. It's dealer work and most cars will have been dealt with, so it's a quick thing to confirm.
