What to check on a G42 2 Series

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Coolant level on the M240i

What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant level in the expansion tank against the marks, and look for dried coolant residue around the cap and below the engine. Ask whether the car has needed topping up.

Why it matters: Coolant loss on the B58 is usually traced to the expansion tank cap and its seal first, with leaks also reported from the water pump and the oil filter housing area. The level warning can be slow to come on, so owners are advised to check the expansion tank themselves. A car with a steady level is a good sign.

  2. Recall work

What to look for: Before you travel, give the VIN to a BMW dealer and ask whether any recall work is outstanding.

Why it matters: Recalls on this generation include seatbelt retractors (2021), rear seat backrest panels covering the side airbags on 2023 model year cars, and software that let the windows and sunroof close after the digital key was removed.

  3. A thump from the back under throttle

What to look for: On an M240i xDrive, drive at low speed and gently come on and off the throttle. Listen and feel for a faint thump from the back of the car as the load changes.

Why it matters: A faint rear thump on throttle changes has been reported, in one case leading to the transfer case being investigated. Note it and ask about any work done under warranty.
