BMW 1 Series M Coupé E82 buying guide

BMW M's compact coupé, built in 2011 with about 450 sold new in the UK. It pairs a tuned version of the 335i's twin-turbo straight six with a six-speed manual, the M3's limited-slip differential and widened bodywork.

The versions

  • 3.0 twin-turbo straight six (N54), 340PS, with an overboost function for extra torque under full throttle
  • 6-speed manual only, rear-wheel drive
  • M variable limited-slip differential taken from the E92 M3
  • Coupé only, on unique 19-inch wheels

What to check on a 1M Coupé

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Loss of power or an engine light

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate hard through second and third gears. Note any hesitation, stutter or reduced-power warning, and whether the engine management light comes on. Ask for a fault code read.

Why it matters: Specialists name three usual causes: a failing high-pressure fuel pump, a faulty knock sensor, or a charge pipe that has split or worked loose. A worn NOx sensor can also light the engine light. None of these is a major job, and the turbo parts are shared with the 335i.

  2. A rattle from the turbos

What to look for: With the window down, accelerate to about 3,000rpm and lift off. Listen for a metallic rattle from under the car as the revs fall.

Why it matters: Wastegate rattle on the 1M is usually a failed gasket where the exhaust meets the turbo. The part itself is small, but reaching it is a big job, so it's worth knowing about.

  3. Groaning from the differential

What to look for: At low speed on full steering lock, in a car park, listen for groaning or juddering from the back of the car.

Why it matters: Groaning from the limited-slip differential in tight, slow turns suggests heavy track use or tired oil, and a friction modifier additive can help. Check the history shows the correct fluids were used: some dealers used M3 fluids, which can damage components.
