Audi TT RS 8S buying guide

The 8S TT RS was sold from 2016 to 2023 as a coupé and roadster, with a 400PS 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo, a seven-speed S tronic and quattro. The TT's engines have a good record, and the checks are mostly about servicing and wear.

The versions

  • 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder turbo, 400PS, 480Nm
  • 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic only; no manual was offered
  • Haldex-based quattro four-wheel drive
  • Coupé and roadster bodies

What to check on a 8S TT RS

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Oil under the sump

What to look for: Look under the front of the car, and at the ground where it has been parked, for oil drips or a wet, oily sump. Check behind any undertray edges with a torch.

Why it matters: Sump pans on the TT RS have been known to leak. A dry underside is what you want to see.

  2. Haldex servicing

What to look for: Look in the history for Haldex quattro oil changes, with dates.

Why it matters: The quattro system is Haldex-based and needs servicing every three years. Specialists stress keeping its fluid fresh, so missing services are worth knowing about on a car with this much power.

  3. S tronic gearbox servicing and behaviour

What to look for: Look for gearbox oil and filter changes in the history. On the drive, pull away gently several times, drive slowly as if in traffic, and feel for jerks, hesitation or delayed shifts.

Why it matters: Every TT RS uses the seven-speed S tronic. The advice for automatic TTs is to make sure the gearbox has had fresh fluid and filters at the right intervals, and records of it are a good sign.
