Audi RS6 C6 buying guide

The C6 RS6, built from 2008 to 2010, uses a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V10, a six-speed Tiptronic automatic, quattro and Dynamic Ride Control suspension, as an Avant and, from 2008, a saloon. Its known faults are specific and can mostly be checked at a viewing.

The versions

  • 5.0 TFSI twin-turbo V10 (BUH) with dry-sump lubrication, 580PS
  • 6-speed Tiptronic torque converter automatic (ZF 6HP26); no manual was offered
  • quattro permanent four-wheel drive with a Torsen centre differential, biased to the rear
  • Dynamic Ride Control suspension with three-stage adjustable damping
  • Avant and saloon bodies

What to check on a C6 RS6

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Oil under the driver's side

What to look for: Look underneath at the undertray on the driver's side for pooled or dripping oil, and with a torch at the back of the engine for weeping.

Why it matters: A seal on the oil pump (often called the 50p seal) is a known failure. The seal itself is small, but reaching it is a big job. It's one of the first things specialists look for on this car.

  2. Coolant pipes behind the driver's side wing

What to look for: Check the coolant level and look for pink or white crusty deposits low down behind the driver's side front wheel. Note any sweet coolant smell after the drive.

Why it matters: The coolant pipes in this area rust and leak. They can be repaired in place, though some garages quote it as a larger job.

  3. Dynamic Ride Control dampers and hoses

What to look for: Look behind each wheel at the dampers for oily wetness, and at the diagonal hoses that link them. On the drive, feel for a floaty, bouncy or knocking ride, and try each damping setting.

Why it matters: Dynamic Ride Control links diagonally opposite dampers hydraulically. The dampers can leak, and road dirt damages the seals. Specialists price this per corner, and the hoses are worth checking at the same time.
