Audi RS4 B5 buying guide

The first RS4, an Avant only, built from 2000 to 2001 with a Cosworth-developed 2.7 litre twin-turbo V6, a 6-speed manual and quattro four-wheel drive. Just over 500 came to the UK, and original, well-kept cars are the ones buyers look for.

The versions

  • 2.7 V6 biturbo (ASJ, later AZR), 380PS, with two BorgWarner K04 turbos
  • 6-speed manual only
  • Permanent quattro four-wheel drive with a Torsen centre differential
  • Avant (estate) body only

What to check on a B5 RS4

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Boost leaks and turbo noise

What to look for: Once the engine is fully warm, accelerate hard in third gear. Boost builds strongly from about 3,000rpm and the car should pull hard to the limiter. A slight whistle under acceleration, a hiss when lifting off, or a turbo that sounds loud and harsh are the things to note. Look for blue smoke in the mirror.

Why it matters: The K04 turbos are normally quiet, so a loud one points to wear. Weak pull is more often a boost leak, a leaking intercooler hose or a failed air flow sensor, all far cheaper than a turbo. Turbo replacement on this engine is a big job, so a diagnostic scan and a boost leak test are worth having before buying.

  2. Misfires and camshaft wear

What to look for: Let the engine idle and feel for a regular pulse or shake through the car, and watch for a flashing engine warning light under load. Ask the seller whether the camshafts have ever been inspected or replaced.

Why it matters: Accelerated camshaft wear affected a small number of these engines, early and late cars alike, and a misfire can be one sign. Most misfires are simpler, such as a coil pack, but a specialist can inspect the camshafts if there's any doubt.

  3. Timing belt and water pump records

What to look for: Look for an invoice naming the timing belt with a date and mileage. The usual advice is to change it every 60,000 miles together with the water pump, and to treat it as due without proof.

Why it matters: The 2.7 V6 uses a belt to drive its camshafts, and a failure causes serious engine damage. A documented, recent change with the water pump is one of the clearest signs of a car that's been maintained properly.
