What to check on a second-generation R8
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
The gearbox oil leak recall
What to look for: Give the chassis number to an Audi dealer and ask whether the gearbox recall has been done. Look under the rear of the car for wet oil.
Why it matters: Cars built between 1 October 2015 and 30 November 2017 were recalled because the gearbox could leak oil when driven hard on track, causing smoke from the engine bay and a fire risk. Most have been done by now.
Magnetic Ride dampers
What to look for: Look at each damper behind the wheels for oily residue. On the drive, switch between modes and feel for a clear difference in firmness.
Why it matters: The magnetic dampers can leak. They're replaced individually or in pairs. A car with dry dampers and a clear change between modes is in good order.
Rear wishbones and knocks
What to look for: Drive over uneven roads slowly with the radio off and listen for knocks from the rear.
Why it matters: The lower wishbones are a known weak spot and are replaced as a unit with the hub.
