What to check on a 8L A3
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
A misfire or uneven running (1.8T)
What to look for: Let the engine idle, then accelerate firmly in a higher gear from low revs. The engine should run evenly and pull cleanly. A stutter, uneven running or a flashing engine light points to a misfire.
Why it matters: The ignition coils on the 1.8T are a known weak point, and a failed coil pack makes the engine run unevenly. They're easy to replace, and a car with new coils in the history is a good sign.
A lumpy idle or lost boost (1.8T)
What to look for: With the engine warm, listen and feel for a lumpy, uneven idle. On the drive, feel for a lack of pull through the mid-range.
Why it matters: A lumpy idle on the 1.8T often points to a failed diverter valve, whose rubber diaphragm lets boost and vacuum escape. A specialist can test it in minutes by checking whether the diaphragm moves, and a replacement valve is a simple fix.
Temperature gauge and water pump
What to look for: On the drive, watch the temperature gauge once the engine is warm. It should sit at or below 90 degrees and stay there. Look in the history for a water pump changed with the cambelt.
Why it matters: The thermostat gives up with age and lets the engine run hot. On the 1.8T, earlier water pumps used plastic impeller blades that could break up, and the later pump with metal blades solves it. The pump is usually changed with the cambelt and tensioner.
